This cool, light weight cotton for summer Kimono (Yukata) is a speciality of Tokushima, a town on the island of Shikoku which has been a traditional centre of indigo dyeing for 350 years.
The texture of Shijira results from the warp threads having a different tension and thickness. The cloth is soaked in hot water to emphasize this uneveness which makes it so attractive.

An experiment in Korean pojagi patchwork using the SHJIRAindigo pieces.
These panels were sewn entirely of shijira but you could mix with silks or other lightweight cottons.
Our pieces were handsewn following some Japanese instructions but there are many
you tube videos on this technique
for either hand or machine sewing.
